What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?
Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP, is a form of regenerative medicine that uses a patient’s own blood and enriches it with plasma before reintroducing it to the patient in the injured area. Within blood, there are three main solids: platelets, white blood cells, and red blood cells.
Platelets are extremely important when there is an injury in the body, as they are essential to clotting and are rich in growth factors that promote healing. Increasing the number of platelets in the blood that are available near the site of a chronic injury is extremely helpful, as the injury will typically have restricted blood, leading to minimal platelets in the area.
Platelet Rich Plasma is a form of regenerative therapy that is actually more effective at treating chronic conditions, such as tennis elbow, than the use of traditional corticosteroid injections. Traditional corticosteroids are beginning to be phased out, as it is being determined that they only temporarily relieve paid, don’t promote healing, and they can actually cause further tendon degradation in the injured area.
Why Choose PRP?
A 2010 study in the Netherlands, conducted by Dr. Taco Gosens determined that PRP is more effective for healing in the long term than traditional corticosteroids. This study split patients suffering from chronic tennis elbow into two groups: one group received PRP and the other received traditional corticosteroids.
While the group with corticosteroids did report more immediate pain relief, the long term effects favored PRP. Within 6 months, the patients who received PRP reported less pain and more function than those who received the corticosteroid injections. Additionally, within 18 months, the patients who received PRP reported 64% less pain and 84% less dysfunction, while the patients who received corticosteroid only reported 24% less pain and 17% less dysfunction.
