Dr.HowardTom Howard, MD

Dr. Howard earned his undergraduate degree at the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY and served 5 years in the Army as an engineer officer. He earned his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences School of Medicine and completed a residency in Family Practice at DeWitt Army Community Hospital in 1987 and a primary care sports fellowship at the USUHS and Nirschl Orthopedic Sports Clinic in Arlington, VA in 1996. He retired from the Army in 2004 after 29 years of service. After retiring he practiced at Fairfax Family Practice in Virginia as Program Director for a Sports Medicine Fellowship and a busy sports clinician, where he developed a comprehensive program for diagnostic musculoskeletal sonography and regenerative medicine. He left northern Virginia and joined NC State Student Health in February 2015.

Dr. Howard has been a volunteer team physician at the high school and college level and has volunteered at multiple endurance races for medical tent coverage. Dr. Howard is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and holds the RMSK credential for musculoskeletal ultrasound from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
